Golden Bull Chasing

I am very competitive, and I love scavenger hunts, so when the owner of Bull City Burger and Brewery, "BCBB" (opening March 21st), announced the 2011 Golden Bull Contest last week, I jumped right on it. Not only do I think that it's a brilliant marketing move, but it's also been so much fun bouncing around Durham in search of a bull and watching others do the same.

First, a little background on BCBB. Seth Gross, co-founder of Wine Authorities here in Durham, is opening a burger/brewery joint downtown (near Dos Perros). There has been a lot of buzz about it (long before the Golden Bull Contest began), and that's for several reasons. A long supporter of sustainable living in the Triangle, he plans to source locally and make as much as possible from scratch. In his press release for BCBB he writes, "We'll grind the beef daily, make the buns, make the mustard, make the ketchup, pickle the pickles, and stuff our all-beef hotdogs. No corn syrup, no added hormones, no antibiotics". Seth has also partnered with local businesses to encourage community building and promote the local economy. The Golden Bull Contest is proof of those partnerships working.

Seth has hidden five golden (really brass because they can't afford gold) bulls in and around Durham. Find a bull and you get a free meal each week for a year once BCBB opens. They reveal clues on their website daily. As you can imagine, my bosses are totally into this contest as well, so we searched high and low for bulls the second half of last week. Unfortunately, we were always just one step behind. There's still one bull left and the clues won't be revealed until March 4th, but I am bound and determined to find it once the clues are posted.

Check out the website and the clues, they are really creative and fun. You definitely have to be deep into the Durham community to figure them out, so I'm glad I'm working with the Taste Carolina crew on this one. Wish us luck next week!
