Farm Country

If you haven't already noticed, I am a little obsessed with the local farms here. I know that the new foodie buzzword (or buzzphrase?) is "Farm to Table", but here in the Triangle it has been a way of life for generations. Restaurants like Crook's Corner in Chapel Hill have made the area famous and have given birth (literally) to places like Neal's Deli. The eldest son of Crooks' founder Bill Neal, Matt Neal, opened the Katz's Deli style lunch counter with his wife a little over a year ago. They focus on, you guessed it, local ingredients. Don't ask for tomatoes in the winter time because they won't have them.

Feeding my obsession this past week Cameron and I dined at ACME in Carrboro (the owner/chef was who I ran into at the market last weekend), and went to a wine and goat cheese tasting at Prodigal Farm. Dinner was great (as expected), but the cheese tasting was AWESOME!

Kat and Dave, another (soon to be) husband and wife team, left their corporate lives in New York City three years ago and bought 96 acres of farmland just outside of Durham where Kat's mother's family has lived for generations. They got a couple of goats to devour the overgrown brush and fell in love. Now with their farm full of goats and dairy equipment they are selling several varieties of goat cheese at Farmers Markets in Raleigh and Hillsborough. We ate some delicious cheese, took a tour of the place and even got to meet the girls.

It was an awesome evening and a perfect end to Cameron's fall break.
